Statement as of 1:31 PM CST on November 07, 2009
... Coastal Flood Watch in effect from late tonight through Monday morning...
The National Weather Service in Houston/Galveston has issued a coastal Flood Watch... which is in effect from late tonight through Monday morning.
.An area of low pressure near the Bay of Campeche is expected to move north into the western Gulf of Mexico on Sunday. This feature combined with high pressure over Texas will lead to strong easterly winds over the Upper Texas coastal waters and increased tide levels. Tides are forecast to run 1 to 1.5 feet above normal through tonight. Tide levels will increase to 2 to 2.5 feet above normal Sunday night.
The highest tide levels are expected to occur during high tide Sunday night. Tide levels between 3.8 and 4.6 feet will be possible. The main impacts are expected to occur along the Bolivar Peninsula and the west end of Galveston Island. Water may at times overspread roadways including Highway 87 on the Bolivar Peninsula and FM 3005 on the west end of Galveston Island leading to hazardous travel conditions.
Elsewhere along the Upper Texas coast and Galveston Bay... beach flooding will be common with minimal if any impacts elsewhere.
Tide levels are expected to quickly subside Monday afternoon as the winds shift to a northerly direction.
