A question plaguing mankind for centuries: "Why is the sky blue?" The one word answer is 'Physics.' However this question is worthy of a more detailed explanation. The "visible" white sunlight we see is made up of all the colors in the rainbow - red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet. This is a miniscule part of the vast electromagnetic spectrum. Each color travels at a different wavelength: red and orange are the longest, indigo and violet are the shortest. When the sunlight hits the earths atmosphere, the light waves are scattered in different directions by air molecules and dust particles. The shorter blue and violet waves are scattered more effectively than longer red and orange waves. The violet, blue and to a lesser extent green waves scatter across the sky and combine to form different shades of blue creating the sky we see. The blue will seem paler over over more densely populated areas where more dust particles and moisture enhance the scattering. Deeper hues of blue are more prevalent over sparsely populated areas.

The National Weather Service (NWS) defines a rainbow as " A luminous arc featuring all colors of the visible light spectrum (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet). It is created by refraction, total reflection, and the dispersion of light. It is visible when the sun is shining through air containing water spray or raindrops, which occurs during or immediately after a rain shower. The bow is always observed in the opposite side of the sky from the sun...
